For folk-country musician Steve Palmer, making music has been about the guitar.

“I’ve always been in love with the guitar. My whole history is just a series of relationships with guitars,” said Palmer, going on to discuss some of the favourites he has had over the years, including a 1954 Gibson Les Paul.

Palmer said he listened to a lot of folk music when he was growing up and the band that first got him into the guitar was the American folk-pop group the Kingston Trio from the late ‘50s.

As a teenager in Edmonton, Palmer moved more into the rock side of things playing in a band called The Warp Factor. It was a band he described as arena rock and they opened for big names like The Who, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and Fleetwood Mac.

His last release, 2014’s Prairie Airs, is an album Palmer said he progressed a lot on having not released one since 2008’s Morning Road.

On Prairie Airs Palmer added new string arrangements to his music, something he said he really enjoyed, mentioning one of his favourite tracks, ‘Sweet is Sweet’, a song he wrote for his girlfriend.

You can catch Palmer at Legacy Guitar and Coffee House Nov. 29.
