The premiere Parade of Lights has been cancelled.
The outdoor parade, hosted by the Cochrane Light Up committee, was slated to roll through historic downtown on Saturday at 6 p.m.
But yesterday, the group took a look at the weekend forecast – which predicts an evening low of -24 C – and decided it was not worthwhile to face any dangers associated with the impeding cold weather.
“It’s just too cold,” said organizer Marni Fedeyko. “I would risk being in trouble from a safety point of view.”
During a frigid Light Up event a couple of years ago, Fedeyko said participants dealt with a host of problems associated with the cold, and visitors complained of frostbite.
She didn’t want a repeat of those same challenges this year.
“There was just a lot of variables. It’s a whole lot of things,” she said.
