The next time you’re in Global Pet Foods picking up goodies for your four-legged family member, don’t forget to leave a donation to help out the local animals without a home.
The pet food and accessories franchise is joining forces with Hill’s Science Diet pet food — and spokesperson Don Cherry — for the Show Us Your Heart campaign, a fundraiser in support of local animal shelters.
All of the proceeds collected at the Cochrane store will go to the Cochrane and Area Humane Society (CAHS).
“The project is to raise much-needed funds and awareness for animal shelters and rescues in our community,” said Fiona Sharman, owner of the Cochrane Global Pet Foods.
“The shelter here needs our help, so we want to support it. The humane society, as well as the town of Cochrane, supports our business, so we want to give back.”
Donations will be collected from Feb. 2-16. For each donation made at Global Pet Foods, an additional $1 will be donated between Global Pet Foods and Hill’s Science Diet.
Sharman said she’s hoping to collect $2,000 for the local animal shelter.
Much of the $2,000 will go towards the general operation of the humane society, said Cheryl Wallach, the marketing, grants and media representative for the CAHS. Each dollar will go towards food, water, shelter and care for the animals.
“We take in a little more than 1,000 animals a year, and some of them need additional medical attention and extra care,” said Wallach. “And all of the animals require the necessities for their stay. Every donation we receive counts.”
At the national level, this is the seventh running of the fundraiser. But for Sharman, who took possession of the business in June 2012, this is her first foray with the campaign.
As extra incentive, the two campaign sponsors will give 10 bonus air miles to those who make an in-store donation of at least $5.
