Phoneography contest looks to showcase town

Cochranites, get ready to bust out your mobile phones for Winter Photographics’ inaugural Phoneography exhibition and contest.

Cochranites, get ready to bust out your mobile phones for Winter Photographics’ inaugural Phoneography exhibition and contest.

The brainchild of Jennifer Winter, co-owner of the photography boutique, Phoneography aims to capture everyday life in Cochrane as seen through the tiny lens of a phone.

“I keep seeing all of these great images, but people don’t get to see them — they are stuck on a computer or a phone,” she said. “We need to get these (images) out there for people to see.”

There are few parameters to the family friendly event, said Winter. Ultimately, there are three criteria for entries to meet: the submission must be taken by a phone, it must be edited by a phone application of some variety, and the image and editing must be completed by one person.

Instagram and Camera+ are just two of the eligible camera apps to be used for the Phoneography exhibition and contest.

Images will be judged based on composition, technical merit, representing the same subject (all the photos must be representative of Cochrane) and presentation.

“We’re not looking for the traditional from the hill shot,” said Winter. “Most people I know use their phone for photographs — it’s always with them. So, go out and have some fun with it. The goal is to rediscover Cochrane through the phone.”

Winter said the top 10 photographs will be picked by the judges, and the top 3 selected by Phoneography will be officially launched April 30 at the Nan Boothby Memorial Library, with entry forms and addition information on the event available May 1. The exhibition, which will be displayed at the library, is planned to finalize mid-October, said Winter.
