Playground cash to be had

After the Alberta Government announced a $20-million playground grant last week, Friends of Fireside want to remind people not to forget about them.

On June 2, the provincial government revealed all new and replacement schools will receive a $250,000 grant for a playground.

Fireside School was the only school in Cochrane that made the list but the fundraising society members said even if the full $250,000 is given for the playground there will still be a lot of fundraising to do.

“I don’t want to sound ungrateful but $250,000 is not even close,” said Laura McDonald, president of Friends of Fireside - the playground fundraising society.

In an effort to create an inclusive playground, McDonald said the estimated cost is up to $700,000.

The grant program applies to all new schools with kindergarten to Grade 6 announced between 2014 and 2018. Replacement schools approved in 2017/18 are also eligible if the school is being built on a new site without an existing playground.
