Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for various communities, including Cochrane

A prolonged and significant rainfall event will bring 75 to 125 millilitres of rain to Cochrane by Wednesday morning, according to Environment Canada.

Early this morning, the environment agency issued a rainfall warning for various communities across south-central Alberta, including Cochrane and Rocky View County.

"Heavy rain will continue to spread north this morning," the agency stated. "Rain will persist over the area until Wednesday. Locally, higher rainfall totals of 150 mm or more are possible."

Environment Canada advises to look to your municipality and the province of Alberta (rivers.alberta.ca) for the latest information and recommendations. They further warn that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

"Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts."

Rocky View County issued the following message in response to the anticipated rain fall:

"Environment Canada and the Alberta River Forecast Center have issued a Flood Watch for both the Bow River and Elbow River. Water levels across southern and central Alberta are expected to increase. The amount of forecasted rain has the potential to raise flow rates, but it is not anticipated to cause any riverbank flooding within the County. Residents are reminded to exercise extreme caution around any water body and be aware of areas known to easily flood such as streams and drainage channels. Avoid rivers if possible and continue to respect any signage and barricades. The river flow peak is expected to occur during the evening of Tuesday, June 14. The County Emergency Management team will remain engaged with Environment Canada, the River Forecasting Centre, and the Provincial Operation Centre until water levels decline and the Flood Watch status is removed. Rocky View County has completed a flood preparation plan and is ready. The flood barrier structures for the hamlet of Bragg Creek are fully operational. If the Flood Watch status is upgraded to a Flood Warning, timely and accurate information will be shared through Safe & Sound, on the County website and social media accounts."
