RCMP issues reminder for safe long weekend

The Victoria Day long weekend is upon us, bringing with it a high volume of traffic travelling our roadways and playing in the backcountry.

The Victoria Day long weekend is upon us, bringing with it a high volume of traffic travelling our roadways and playing in the backcountry.

As always, RCMP are urging the travelling public to refrain from drinking and driving, and will have a close eye on the activity occurring in popular camping and recreation destinations.

“We want people to go out and have a good time — we’re just asking that they do it safely,” said Cpl. Gary Fedrau of the Cochrane RCMP detachment.

Fedrau said the RCMP is well-prepared for the May-long weekend festivities, with an increased number of officers out on patrol.

“We’ll have our patrol out on quads and vehicles — just to keep an eye on things,” he added.

All liquor-, drug- and firearm-related laws will be strongly enforced, said Fedrau, as will the current fire ban for Cochrane and Rocky View County (RVC).

As of May 14, both RVC and Cochrane have a Level 3 fire ban in effect because of the dry and windy conditions.

This restricts permit burning and suspends outstanding burning permits until further notice.

The ban includes: incinerators, regulated burning barrels, camp stoves, solid fuel barbecues, recreational camp fires, chimeneas, and fires contained within approved facilities and appliances in designated camping and recreation areas.

Internal household appliances and liquid fuel barbecues are exempt from the ban.
