Relay team hosts fundraiser May 31 at Ducks

As time keeps ticking down to the beginning of the Cochrane Relay for Life 2013, fundraising is in full effect for the 11 teams signed up to participate in the annual event.

The all-night affair, set to run June 7 at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC), is held each year in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Last year’s event raised about $36,000 for the foundation. This year the bar has been raised with a goal of $50,000, as Carol Tapsay — co-chair of the event — told the Cochrane Eagle earlier this year. As of May 27, nearly $9,000 has been raised.

Working hard to help the Cochrane Relay for Life hit that goal is the five-person team dubbed Up All Night For The Fight. Having already raised more than $800 for the cause, the team is looking to add to that total with a fundraising dinner and auction hosted at Ducks on the Roof May 31.

“Cancer hasn’t been beaten yet — that’s why I keep going back to the relay,” said Debbie Demars, a member of the team and one of the organizers of the Up All Night For The Fight Fundraiser Night. “With this event, I’d like to raise about $2,500.”

For a ticket price of $20, fundraiser attendees will find themselves with a plate full of food, a drink and an opportunity to bid on a plethora of goodies in the silent auction.

Auction items include a one-night stay at Jasper’s Tekarra Lodge, a basket from Neon Cactus Wines and a detailing package from Village Honda worth about $300 — among others.

The fundraiser gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Bentleys Books, Ducks on the Roof and the Eagle office.
