The City of Calgary continues to repair a large water main break in the Bowness and Montgomery area. This critical water transmission line has severely impacted the supply in Calgary’s reservoirs and the ability to move water across the city.
On Thursday, Calgarians significantly in the afternoon, explained the City, but went back to their normal use during the evening. This has put significant strains on Calgary's water supply, and the City urged residents to redouble their conservation efforts.
"Calgary is currently using more water than it can produce," it said. "If Calgarians do not reduce our water use, we are at risk of running out. The City is asking Calgarians to save water for the next few days while the work gets completed."
The City asked residents and Calgary water users in nearby communities like Airdrie to strive to reduce their daily use of water a further 25 per cent on Friday,
"This could mean actions like shaving a few minutes off your shower, skipping a few flushes, and holding off on a load of laundry," it said.
Crews are still working around the clock to effect the repairs, and overnight, City employees continued to pump water from the area around the break.
"We are hopeful that by later today we’ll be able to see the feeder main and determine the cause of the break," the City said.
