On Aug. 8 and 9, thousands of riders will embark on a two-day, over 200-kilometre cycling journey from Calgary through the Rocky Mountains and back to Calgary in the fight against cancer.
The seventh annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer is a multi-day event to raise money and awareness for breakthrough research and discovery of new cancer therapies at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Cross Cancer Institute and 15 other centres across Alberta.
On Aug. 8, riders will start at Canada Olympic Park at 8 a.m. and head to Springbank Park For All Seasons. From there, participants will head down Hwy 22 passed Banded Peak School, then to Priddis, Black Diamond and finishing in Okotoks.
The next day will have riders bike from Okotoks to Turner Valley through to the M.D. Foothills to Priddis, Bragg Creek and completing the race back in Calgary.
Riders will be provided with gear transport to the camping location, along with a tent, hot showers, catered dinner and an evening of entertainment. Medical services and massages are available as well.
Pit stops are situated every 25 to 30 kilometres, stocked with water, sports drinks, high-energy snacks and ride supplies. Toilet facilities are included at the stops.
Every day, 43 Albertans are diagnosed with cancer and nearly one in two are expected to develop cancer in their lifetime.
