Rocky View Schools (RVS) has announced the closure of schools today (Dec. 20) as a result of cold weather.

Temperatures are currently -36 C in Airdrie but feel like -49 C accounting for wind chill, according to The Weather Network. Airdrie and much of southern Alberta are currently under an extreme cold warning.

The ongoing cold snap is expected to remain in place until the weekend.

RVS' online schools, Discovery Trails Online School and Summit Trails Online High School, remain open.

As for the Catholic schools in Airdrie, Cochrane, and Chestermere, those have also been closed today due to cold weather and buses have been cancelled, according to social media posts this morning by the Calgary Catholic School District.

"Staff will still attend CCSD schools in Airdrie, Chestermere and Cochrane to ensure there is a safe place for any students that get dropped off inadvertently," a CCSD tweet read.
