A woman in her early 30s from nearby Morley is dead following a single vehicle rollover that took place around 5:45 a.m. on Hwy 1A, near Branch Road on the Stoney Nation June 23.
A man in his late 20s, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was flown by STARS to Foothills Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was trapped in the vehicle and was extracted by fire services.
The female driver had been thrown from the vehicle and was determined to have succumbed to her injuries on scene by attending paramedics.
Cochrane RCMP, who attended the scene, are still investigating the incident and are awaiting the medical examiner’s reporter.
Alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
A 44-year-old County resident was clocked excessively speeding by Rocky View County Enforcement Services around 9:20 p.m. June 18.
The individual was spotted driving 222 km/hr in a black Nissan Maxima near Bill Hill Springs Road, 10 minutes northeast of Cochrane. The officer was safely able to pull over and ticket the speeder by Weedon Road, north of Cochrane.
As the speeder had overtaken a marked Rocky View County Fire Services vehicle, the charge of careless driving was added in addition to the speeding ticket.
The driver will make a mandatory court appearance in Cochrane Provincial Court in August.
“Speed limits are set for a reason and the most important factor is always public safety,” said Lorraine Wesley-Riley, County manager of enforcement services, in a recent press release.
“We hope the ticket and charge sends a message that speed limits must be respected for the safety of everyone in the community.”
