Walking has always been a great activity for leisure, exercise, and social connection — and this September, it will also be a way to support Cochrane’s seniors.
Local organization Seniors on the Bow (SOTB) has announced its participation in this year’s Grand Parade, a Canada-wide fundraising walk in support of aging populations and the organizations that serve them.
“One of our members had been involved with it previously somewhere else and brought the idea to us,” said Jeremy Coulter, program coordinator for SOTB. “We wanted to do it last year, but the timing was a little bit off. So this year we jumped at it as soon as we could.”
Set for Sept. 20, The Grand Parade invites participants to walk either 2 km or 5 km along the Bow River, beginning near the SLS Centre. Walkers can register as individuals or as part of a team.
The fundraising goal for Cochrane’s event is $20,000.
“So far, we have six walkers and three teams registered, raising about $1,200,” said Coulter. “Our members who know about it are really excited. People love to see others doing something to help our community.”
SOTB has already secured its first local sponsor — Sunset Ridge Pharmacy — and is actively connecting with other businesses.
“We’re still very early in the process,” Coulter added. “Our sponsorship team is out and about, talking to a number of businesses.”
Though fundraising is a key component of the Grand Parade, the walking aspect itself has generated enthusiasm — particularly among SOTB members, many of whom are already avid walkers.
“We have our own walking club at Seniors on the Bow,” said Coulter. “They’re getting geared up. We’ve already got a couple of teams going — we’re excited and getting ready.”
