Twice a week, Shannon Bell arrives at the Cochrane and Area Humane Society’s shelter at 7 a.m., greeted by her many four-legged friends, anxious to get out for a much-needed bathroom break or sniff of the morning air.
Bell has been doing this routine for the past five years and is being recognized in the Eagle’s annual Best of Cochrane competition with the top-place gold ranking.
“I love it because no matter how hard of a life they had prior to coming to us, whatever their circumstances were, they’re just so appreciative and so forgiving,” Bell said of the Humane Society animals.
After Bell and her husband retired and had to put down their own cockapoo-shih tzu cross after 16 years, they decided against getting another canine due to the couple’s frequent travelling. But Bell wanted to remain close to dogs.
“I just thought that would be a nice, healthy environment to be in because I really like dogs,” Bell said about choosing to volunteer at the shelter.
Bell does pretty much anything the society needs – dog walking, yard care, fundraisers or special events.
“After you’ve worked and raised children all your life, you know what needs to be done. You don’t have to be asked,” Bell said.
Karla Bennett, the society’s volunteer coordinator, agreed and had much praise for Bell.
“She’s one of those people who sees a need and takes of care it. She’ll help out anywhere.
“Shannon made our animals and our shelter part her family and we are so happy she’s part of ours.”
Bennett said one important duty that Bell does is taking in the cans and bottles collected as part of their Containers for Critters program. Visitors bring in drink containers and proceeds go towards the shelter. Over $6,000 has been raised since the start of this year.
When asked if she’s got any favourites, Bell contended, “That would be like trying to pick your favourite child,” with a laugh.
Bell urges anyone – especially those retired – to contribute by volunteering at the shelter.
