Spray Lake Sawmills (SLS) held an open house May 8 to allow area residents a glimpse into what the Cochrane forestry company has planned for the coming few years.
SLS’ 2013 production table revealed the company’s harvesting plans spanning from 2011 to 2018.
In 2011/12, SLS harvested 260,445 cubic metres of forested area; 2012/13 was 379,316 cubic metres; and 2013/14 (the current timber year), 528,057 cubic metres is planned.
For the entire 2011-16 development plan, SLS will have harvested at total of 2,175,037 cubic metres.
SLS woodlands operations manager Rob Berndt said the timber year runs from April 1 to March 31, and that the company’s harvest plans, along with maps, can be found on SLS’ website, which can assist people who live or play in the areas to see where and when any particular area will experience logging activity.
Those who attended the open house at the Cochrane Curling Club could view general and area-specific maps of areas being harvested in the near future like Jumpingpound (west of Bragg Creek), Coalcamp (north of Cochrane) and Ghost River (west of Cochrane).
Attendees were also able to fill out a ‘record of public input or concern’ form during the open house.
Open houses are held in Cochrane and Crowsnest Pass the first week of May each year.
