The deadline for the 2013 Spray Lake Sawmills RPS/Clearwater Scholarship is looming.
So any Cochrane Grade 12 students wishing to land one of the two $1,500 scholarships should get their application submitted today (April 17).
The scholarships will be awarded to two Cochrane high school students entering their first year of post-secondary education as a full-time student at a recognized institution, said Robin Mitchell, general manager and executive director of the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC).
“The board wanted to recognize the talented youth who have used the SLS Centre during their time in Cochrane,” said Mitchell. “We’re looking for the well-rounded Cochranites who are going on to post-secondary education and, hopefully, to make a difference in this world.”
Grade 12 students from St. Timothy, Cochrane and Bow Valley High Schools, as well as Cochrane Home Educators are eligible to apply.
The scholarships will be awarded to the top two applicants based on a total number of criteria points. Points are accrued based on involvement with the SLSFSC, leadership and community involvement, academics, and the applicants need for a scholarship. Points vary depending on the criteria met by the applicants.
In addition, the application asks for two references speaking to the accomplishments of the student.
This is the fourth year this scholarship has been offered. Typically, Mitchell said between 12 and 18 students apply. Past winners have attended post-secondary institutions as far away as Ireland and New Zealand.
