Springbank firefighters snuff car fire on Highway 1

A car fire slowed Tuesday traffic on Highway 1 west of Calgary

A vehicle suddenly caught fire while driving along Highway 1 near Calaway Park Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 21), forcing the driver to pull over to the side of the road and wait for fire crews to respond.

The driver was able to exit the vehicle safely in an eastbound lane and Rocky View County's Springbank Fire Station responded to the incident around 2 p.m.

The vehicle, a Subaru Impreza, was a total loss according to a Rocky View County fire services spokesperson, who said the fire started in the engine compartment.

Given the state of the vehicle after firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, the cause was indeterminable said the spokesperson.

One eastbound lane remained open while crews put out the fire and the incident had been cleared within about an hour and 15 minutes after the initial emergency call.
