Springbank Community High School will be hosting its annual Fine Arts & Language Awards on May 26.
The free event is open to the public and will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the school. The awards are to show recognition for students in the school’s multiple art programs.
“These awards are for every level – Grade 9, 10, 11, and 12,” said Ivona Comba, the department head for fine arts, languages, and physical education with the school.
She said students in the following programs will be recognized: French immersion, French, Spanish, art, drama, media arts (photography, animation, and filmmaking), culinary arts, and band.
The evening will feature presentations from the students displaying the projects they’ve been working on throughout the year.
“Between all the awards we have the students present – for example the band students will do a band number,” Comba said.
The presentations will range from watching short films, reading literature and poems, displaying art portfolios, animations, a drama performance, and more. There will also be a culinary competition at the event.
“At the beginning of the evening there will be a food competition, then at the very end of the evening we announce the winner,” Comba explained.
Comba said students will prepare a few courses in advance of the evening that will be available for sampling by the audience. Those in attendance will then vote on their favourite dishes, thus determining the winner.
Comba said the night is important for the students as it gives them recognition for all their accomplishments.
“Kids don’t have to take these courses, so we’re celebrating the fact that these kids have persevered and stuck to these courses. We’re trying to celebrate the whole person rather than just the academic person – we talk about their interest and how it could lead to other things other than academia,” Comba explained.
