For those who are fans of having a real Christmas tree in their home for the Holiday season, Cochrane Canadian Tire is offering a way to purchase one while giving back to the local community.
Five dollars from every Christmas tree that is sold at the location will go towards Cochrane First Scouting.
Rob Hatch is the owner of the local store as well as chair of the Cochrane and Calgary chapters of Jumpstart, a nationally registered charity dedicated to removing financial barriers so kids across Canada have the opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity.
“It’s just another way of partnering with another good community group and trying to do our part,” said Hatch.
Hatch explained that it was a conscious decision when they first came to town in 2000 that they were not going to sell fresh cut trees because the Scouts had their own tree lot. Last year, he said because of the bigger stores coming in, selling the trees was something they felt they had to do. Hatch said that they decided that they would give $5 from every tree to the Scouts and said that came to around $3,800.
This year, Hatch said he thought it would be a good idea to partner up with them officially.
Hatch said he had talked to a scout leader and they said they were having a rough time with the tree lot in the past few years.
Hatch suggested that they partner and he would continue to give a portion of the proceeds to the scouts and they could come and volunteer if they liked. He said on the weekends the different Scout groups come and volunteer to help people carry out trees.
