Temporary layover leads to annual Fall Fair

The leaves are changing and the air is getting cooler – it is starting to look like fall in Cochrane, meaning it’s time for the second annual Cochrane Fall Fair to take place at the Cochrane & District Agricultural Society grounds.

“We just had a really positive response from people in Cochrane as far as sponsorship and support and different ideas and participation, which is really great,” said Molly Sapergia, general manager of the Cochrane Ag Society.

The events will run Friday, Sept. 19 from 4-11 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The fair will feature midway rides, mini chuckwagon races, lawnmower races, horse events, a trade show, a community garage sale and jackpot team roping.

Sapergia said there would also be a lot of new events and activities this year, bringing the community even more activities to take in, such as the Excel Homes Special Event Zone, which will feature an indoor entertainment stage with magician Christopher Cool, family singer Mary Lambert and a lot of other entertainment throughout the weekend.

There will also be the Brookfield Homes Children’s Zone that will have pony rides, a petting zoo, rabbit agility races and other interactive games.

Another addition will be the Anything Goes Pet Show! that will run Sunday and will feature four classes: All Star Pets, Cutest Pets, Best costume and Pets Got Talent.

Last year, Sapergia said they had just under 8,000 people attend and this year they are hoping for around 10,000.

She explained that the Fall Fair first happened in Cochrane by chance, as the company that owned the midway called the Ag Society and said they had a layover weekend and wanted to set up on their grounds.

Sapergia said the Ag Society allowed them to set up on the grounds, but there wasn’t any large event associated with it.

She said that got the society thinking that they didn’t have a signature event on their grounds, and it was their 40th anniversary coming up in Cochrane.

“The board of directors felt that this could be an opportunity to give the community a really good family focused event,” explained Sapergia. They invited the midway back last year, received a lot of support from the community and the rest is Fall Festival history.

Admission is $5 per car on Friday and $5 per person Saturday and Sunday. Ages 10 and under get in for free. For more information visit cochranefallfair.com.
