Time to get MADD

Dear Editor:

I joined MADD — Mothers Against Drunk Drivers — last week.

I didn’t want to go to a funeral 16 weeks ago.

I didn’t want to see all the other mothers at the funeral, supporting their children, just as I was.

I didn’t want to learn that my youngest son was almost the same age of the victim — my oldest son the same age as the drunk driver.

I didn’t want to go to court and begin to understand our painful, complicated legal system.

I do want to shout the message: “Don’t drink and drive!”

I do want the conversation to continue with the young people in this town, who I’ve known for many years.

I do want to volunteer my time, here and there, at sporting events — anywhere — where I can continue this message.

I do want others to join me, spending an afternoon handing out MADD red ribbons, or to sit and brainstorm ways to raise awareness, here in Cochrane.

To join MADD is free, and you can choose where you fit in and the amount of time you can contribute.

Please contact me at [email protected] or on Facebook — Melissa Dark Lonnie Basiuk — if you have any questions or ideas, or would like to join me to volunteer a few hours a month.

You can also contact Al Lyon at [email protected] or call 403-932-9090.
