If you’re in the mood for a pool party, the Town of Cochrane wants you to bust out your bathing suit and take the plunge.
Well, not exactly, but you are invited to the Rock the Waves community celebration tomorrow (May 8) on the soccer field on the south side of Spray Lake Sawmills (SLS) Family Sports Centre.
The event is intended to provide the residents with the opportunity to see what progress has been made on construction of the new aquatic/curling facility, which launched just over a month ago and expected to open in the spring of 2017.
“We’re thrilled to see the fencing up and work starting on this project,” Mayor Ivan Brooker said in a press release. “This new facility will be a huge benefit for Cochrane and area families, and enhance life for everyone who lives or visits Cochrane.”
The ‘community celebration’ will include music from the Cochrane Pipe Band, hot dogs and other treats, Rock the Waves keepsakes and an update on the mayor’s March 26 challenge – for the community to raise $100,000 during the course of a month for the new facility.
Budgeted at $45 million, the new aquatic/curling facility is being funded by a variety of sources, including provincial and federal grants, the town, Rocky View County and fundraising efforts through the Rock the Waves campaign. Thus far, fundraising has garnered approximately $4.4 million of the town’s goal of $10.6 million.
The town said Friday’s celebration will bring together local groups that will use the new facility, sponsors and contributors, representatives from government funders and town officials and staff.
Since construction began on the new pool and curling centre, access and parking at the SLS Centre has been hindered: updates and a live webcam can be found at cochrane.ca/construction.
The event begins at 3 p.m. and is expected to last for approximately half an hour.
