The Town of Cochrane issued a press release this week advising Cochrane pet owners to be mindful to adhere to the Animal Bylaw.

According to Sergeant Charlene Ruttle with municipal enforcement, there has been an increase in bylaw infractions as of late, including a ‘range of noise complaints (excessive barking), dogs off leash (in on-leash areas), roaming cats and defecation not being picked up’.

Beginning April 1, town municipal enforcement officers will be strictly enforcing the Animal Bylaw.

“People will see an increase in patrols on parks and pathways in town,” said Ruttle. “Our goal is to have an animal-friendly community that everyone can enjoy.”

The town-issued release highlighted that all dogs and cats living within the town of Cochrane must be licensed; that dogs must be on-leash at all times except when in designated off-leash areas; animal defecation must be picked up; pets must not roam, bark excessively, jump aggressively or threaten others; and cats must remain on their owner’s property.

Fines for Animal Bylaw infractions range from $100-$300 for such infractions as an unlicensed animal, animals out of control in off-leash areas or causing a public disturbance to up to $500 for defecation not picked up.

Animals that attack and cause injury to an animal or person may result in penalties exceeding $1000; vicious animal offences can reach $1500.
