In a Monday morning update from Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek, she commended Calgary's residents for their reduction in water use.
She said the City of Calgary used 457 million litres of water on June 9 compared to 650 million litres prior to the water main break. Despite an available supply of 620 litres this morning, she urged resident to keep up their water conservation.
In yesterday's update, Calgary Emergency Management Agency Chief Susan Henry said the reservoirs need to remain above one third capacity in order to have enough water for critical fire emergency efforts and life safety.
City of Calgary director of water services Nancy Mackay said crews succeeded in cutting into the pipe on Saturday to remove the damaged portion. The pipe was prepped for repair, while completing many technical tests to understand what other work is needed.
A section of pipe was removed near the break on Sunday, and this is the first step to remove the compromised sections of the pipe. After completing the assessment, crews will start installing the new section and completing the welding.

The City of Calgary issued an emergency alert at about 6:30 a.m. last Thursday morning, June 6, due to a critical water main break along 16th Ave NW rendering the city's water supply in precarious state.
Significant progress was made on fixing the broken water main with crews reaching the damaged section of over the weekend.
Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions remain in effect in the City of Calgary, as well as the City of Airdrie.
Development activities in Airdrie may continue if using non-potable water. Contractors have been notified that they can bring water from unaffected areas with proper documentation.
City pools and arenas continue to remain closed until further notice.
Residents cannot:
- Water lawns, gardens, trees, shrubs, and flowers by any method other than rain water.
- Wash down any outdoor surfaces, including exterior building surfaces, windows, sidewalks, driveways, or walkways of any sort unless your business requires to for health and safety reasons.
- Wash cars on driveways or streets.
- Fill outdoor decorative features, fountains, pools, or hot tubs.
- Use potable water for construction purposes such as grading, compaction, or dust control.
Residents are strongly encouraged to follow indoor water conservation:
- Use dishwasher and washing machine only when required and with full loads.
- Turn off the tap when brushing teeth or shaving.
- Limit showers to five minutes or less and keeping baths shallow.
- Scrape plates clean rather than rinsing food off.
- Turn off humidifiers and ice machines, delay washing vehicles,
- Businesses using large volumes of non-essential water, such as laundromats and car washes, are being asked to reduce water use.
- Businesses using water to deliver a product or service that is life sustaining for people and animals are exempt. Other exemptions include any businesses that must use water to meet health code standards, such as health centres and restaurants.
Additionally, a fire ban is in effect for The City of Calgary, as well as the City of Airdrie and Rocky View County.
