The man who was at the property where the detained black Chrysler Sebring sedan was parked and who was detained by the Cochrane RCMP in connection to the shooting of a 60-year-old German tourist yesterday on Highway 1A, has now been released. RCMP said there are no charges laid in the case yet. The Cochrane RCMP with Calgary General Investigation Section continue to follow up on leads and are pursuing all avenues. The owner of the trailer who prompted the 911 call made contact with RCMP, after seeing media reports.

The German victim who was shot remains in hospital, still in critical, but stable condition.  His family is very appreciative of support received.

An update to this investigation will not be provided until the RCMP have confirmed information to relay to the public.

“We know how much the public is interested, and wanting an update on this terrible incident, but we are mindful of not compromising our investigation” said Inspector Lauren Weare, Officer in Charge of Cochrane Detachment.

“A solid investigation which will stand the tests of the court is methodical and takes time.  We thank the public for their patience while our members focus on their tasks.”

Yesterday (Aug. 4) afternoon, a public tip led the Cochrane RCMP to detain the black Sebring which was also believed to be connected to the shooting. The police no longer believe that the shooting was an act of road rage, nor that it was a random incident. Neither the German man, who is now recovering in the hospital after being airlifted to the hospital yesterday and underwent surgery, nor his family were the intended targets of the shooting. RCMP members on the scene said there are several detainees at the Cochrane RCMP detachment but have not said whether they are in connection to this incident. According to a neighbour, Annemarie Stevenson, a woman was detained by RCMP in possible connection to the shooting of a 60-year-old German tourist but has since released her. "She's hurting right now," said Stevenson. Stevenson said she also is familiar with the man who was detained by police. She described the man as "troubled" during his teenage years. "I used to hang out with a friend of his." RCMP said this is an extremely complex and dynamic investigation. Further updates will be provided when available.
