Volunteers needed in Cochrane for kids zone Canada Day activities

The Cochrane and Area Events Society needs 34 volunteers to help run the Canada Day celebration kids zone at Mitford Park July 1

Canada Day is only a few days away, but more volunteers are needed to ensure the Cochrane and Are Event Society's (CAES) day full of festivities goes off without a hitch.

If the event planning committee can't round up another 34 volunteers before July 1, they will be forced to pull the plug on many or all of the kids zone games they have planned at Mitford Park throughout the day. Some of the activities include a giant inflatable obstacle course, inflatable archery, water games and golf.

"We need to have these stations manned, we cannot just let them run by themselves because it's a safety issue," said CAES secretary Marina Chabbert. "With the timing of the event just a few days away, we really need to get the word out for volunteers if we want these activities to go ahead."

Chabbert says volunteers will work in shifts of three to four hours, with programming kicking off at Mitford Park around noon and capping off with fireworks at 11 p.m.

Right now, they are prioritizing recruiting volunteers for the kids zone. However, they also need more hands to help with other event-related tasks, including set-up and take-down.

The events society is having its volunteer orientation meeting tonight at the Cochrane Legion at 6 p.m. Chabbert said those who haven't signed up to volunteer yet but are interested in helping are welcome and encouraged to attend.

"If you can't make it for the orientation meeting, it's not life or death," she said. "We can always orient volunteers on site. It just helps to take some of the pressure off so people know what to expect."

Those who wish to volunteer to help with Canada Day festivities in Cochrane can sign up here.
