Glenbow Elementary School donated $2,700 to the Iyahrhe Nakoda Food Bank Society on March 27 with money raised through the school's Warrior Paint project.
“Not only are they helping to feed people, but they are also feeding the spirits of people,” said Sherri Rinkel-Mackay a retired teacher and Warrior Paint learning facilitator.
The Warrior Paint project was started eight years ago through the Roots and Wings program and has since raised $12,530 over that time.
During the project, students created paintings that featured photos of the community’s ancestors and then had them printed on cards.
Students who participated in the project learned many skills and were responsible for creating a business plan, applying for a loan and repaying their loan through their card sales.
The cards have been sold in a variety of locations around Cochrane and are on permanent display at the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park information centre, where they are also sold.
Cards come in sets of six for $15 and for every card sold $8 is donated to the food bank.
All proceeds will go to fresh foods for the Iyahrhe Nakoda Food Bank Society, which is the biggest need of the organization.
“It is nice that they see [the need] and bring awareness,” said Kelvima Snow of the Iyahrhe Nakoda Food Bank Society and community.
Anyone looking to support the project can purchase cards from Glenbow Elementary School, Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and at the Iyahrhe Nakoda Food Bank Society.
The Iyahrhe Nakoda Food Bank Society is also accepting food or cash donations. For more information, contact (403)-881-2766.
