Cochrane RCMP said a woman who fell three metres from a window in her home on Jan. 20 is recovering in the hospital.

Cochrane Emergency Medical Services and STARS were called to the home, located southwest of Cochrane, just before 4 p.m. after a 60-year-old woman fell about 12 feet, landing on a wooden deck, said Cpl. Greg Stannard.

“It sounded like she was shaking a blanket out the window to air it out, but we’re not certain what happened after that,” he said.

The woman’s husband found her on the deck some time later, he added.

STARS Air Ambulance transported her to a Calgary hospital, with the possibility of life-threatening injuries. Stannard said the woman was coherent during a hospital visit the next day (Jan. 21).

“We went to the hospital to make sure there was not anything suspicious about the fall, and there wasn’t,” said Stannard.

“She was awake and talking — so that’s a good sign.”

The woman’s name has not been released.

Cochrane RCMP have charged two men with public mischief, alleging they made a false report of a hit-and-run.

On Jan. 11 members of the Cochrane detachment located a scene near the Royal Bank where it appeared a vehicle lost control, spun around and knocked over a lamp post.

At the same time, a male attended the detachment and made a report of a hit and run to his vehicle near 2nd Avenue.

Evidence collected from the scene, the male’s truck and subsequent investigation revealed both incidents were the same and that the complaint of hit and run was false.

The vehicle’s owner, Daniel Duchscher and the alleged driver at the time, Lawrence Duchscher have both been charged with public mischief making a false statement to police under the Criminal code.

Lawrence Duchscher was also charged with driving disqualified and failing to remain at an accident scene.

A Cochrane RCMP officer suffered minor injuries Jan. 20 when he was hit by a vehicle during a traffic stop near the intersection of Highways 1 and 22.

The unnamed officer sustained minor injuries to his arm and was treated and released from hospital.

The officer responded to a complaint of a suspected impaired driver on Highway 1 heading east at about 6 p.m. The officer located the Toyota RAV4, stopped the vehicle and after speaking to the driver advised him he was under arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

At that time the driver started the vehicle and fled the scene. The officer attempted to prevent the driver from starting the car and was struck by the vehicle as it sped away. The suspect’s vehicle was last seen heading south on Highway 22.

Police are now looking for 35-year-old Richard Dylan Sawchuck of Courtenay, B.C. Warrants have been issued for his arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, escape from lawful custody, assault on a police officer and assault on a police officer with a weapon.
