Dragons and zombies don’t make the best bedfellows apparently.
Zombie Survivor 5 km fun run founders Kyle Fitzgerald and Adil Hooda presented their event on the CBC entrepreneurial show Dragon’s Den in March of last year after flying out to Toronto. They were offered a deal, but they decided it wasn’t the right fit.
Originally, they were planning on expanding the annual event, featuring an obstacle course and hordes of roving “undead” volunteer runners, to multiple cities. However, they soon realized the amount of work needed to organize additional runs and conflicts with other projects wouldn’t allow them to do so.
“We were a little naďve about how much work would go into it,” Fitzgerald said.
Although they accepted ‘dragons’ David Chilton and Jim Trevling’s offer, he said it fell apart soon after.
Fitzgerald said they’ve redirected their sights to the Cochrane event. “We’re really focused on making the best event we can.”
With that in mind, he said for this year they’re working on improving the online registration process and also allowing participants more customization for their teams, such as logos. He expects a similar turn out as last year, around 2,000 participants.
This year’s Zombie Survivor will take place July 25 in Cochrane at the Cochrane & District Agricultural Society’s facility. “Super early” bird tickets for both “zombies” and “survivors” can be purchased until April 12, while early bird tickets start April 13 and regular registration begins May 18.
