Edge School for Athletes senior Channia Alexander will be close to home at the next level of her hockey career.

The 17-year-old Edge Mountaineers Midget Prep female hockey defenceman has committed to the Mount Royal Cougars women’s hockey team in Calgary, where she will be studying nursing for the next five years starting in September.

A third-year Edge School student, Alexander has a deep dossier on the Cougars program, as older sister Cylenna just finished her second season with the Cougars.

“I know the coaches and many of the players there through my sister and I’ve practiced with them a couple of times, so it was a really good fit for me since I know everyone there already,” Alexander relays.

“Plus, it’s only 30-minute drive from my house to the school so I won’t have to worry about traveling through the States to a new school during the summer like some of my friends will be doing.”

A self-described puck-moving defenceman, Alexander contributed 19 points (6 goals, 13 assists) in 28 games this season.

“Channia has been one of our leaders this year as a strong defensive player, and this is a great opportunity for her to play close to home,” Mountaineers head coach Carla MacLeod observes.

“In women’s hockey, the biggest thing for players, besides one day competing for an Olympic gold medal, is to play for a college or a university.”

Edge Mountaineers Midget Prep female squad finished third (bronze) in the Junior Women’s Hockey League Major Junior Division this season. Alexander played a key role in the team’s success.

“All of us on the team have grown and developed as players over the last couple of seasons,” she says, adding she’s preparing for the intensity of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, Canada West play starting in the fall. “Personally, I want to be a little bit more physical with how I play, as I want to be a player who battles in front of the net and is hard to push down when the battles get tough.”
