In a 57-0 blowout game back on home turf Nov.12, the Cochrane Cobras sent the Winston Churchill Bulldogs back to Lethbridge with their tails between their legs.
Points built up fast for the Cobras who finished 20-0 in the first quarter and went up to 43 points by the end of the second. Running back Ethan Price made his presence known on the field with two touchdowns between the second and third quarters.
Grade 10 wide receiver for the Cobras Tate Larsen, who is in his first year playing for the team, said it was a great feeling to be able ride their win from the Rocky View Sports Association championship Oct. 29 into the provincial semi-final and praised his team for their victory against the Bulldogs.
"We really shined in our running game today and we had really good blocking on the line," he said. "It all just came together for us."
The Cobras will find out in the coming days who they will be pitted against for the Alberta Schools' Athletics Association South Final game, scheduled for Nov. 20 against Medicine Hat's Crescent Heights Vikings.
Cobras co-head coach Robbie McNab said the team is just taking it week-by-week, not looking too far ahead or worrying about the road of competitors to finish zones and pave their way to provincials.
"We've just go to get better every week," he said. "We threw the ball well, we ran the ball well, our defence played well - I think we played great everywhere tonight."
McNab added there are still some issues with unnecessary penalties on the team but nothing of concern.
The Cobras have won the last six consecutive provincial championships, excluding 2020 when the season was cancelled. Lloydminster's Holy Rosary High School has been their competitor in five out of six of the provincial finals and Larsen believes its likely that will be the case again this year.
"That's the big one for us," he said. That's the game."
Larsen said he's confident they can get there but said the team needs some improvement passing and spreading out the ball to some of the lesser key players to get everyone involved in the game.
