The Rockyview Silvertips’ junior B lacrosse team finished their historic 2022 season by finishing in fourth place at the Larry Bishop Memorial Cup Aug. 1. The ‘Tips recorded a 1-3 record at the tournament, their sole win coming against the Manitoba Blizzard.
Members of the Cochrane Piranhas put forward the swim club’s best-ever showing at regionals Aug. 5 to 7 at Calgary’s MNP Community Sports Centre. Cochrane’s swimmers accumulated 886 points and dozens of medals, smashing their previous best of 788 points in 2019. Swimmer Aaron Xiao set another provincial record, this time in the 50-metre back stroke.
Four Cochrane and area athletes competed at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara, Ont. Local competitors included Simon Baker in baseball, Nicholas Hooper in wrestling, Kaden Colling in road cycling, and Wyatt Viste in boys’ lacrosse. Hooper won gold and bronze in his competitions, Baker earned silver as a member of Alberta’s boys’ baseball team, and Viste helped the Alberta boys’ lacrosse team to a first-ever Canada Summer Games medal by beating Quebec for the bronze.
The Cochrane Piranhas earned 27 medals at the Alberta Summer Swimming Association’s provincial championships, hosted in Edmonton from Aug. 12 to 14. The club also set new provincial records in two categories, as well as several club records and a team banner.
The Cochrane Cobras football team opened their 2022 Rocky View Sports Association season by beating the Bert Church Chargers in Airdrie, 44-27, on Aug. 27. Senior running back Ethan Clazie led the Cobras’ offence with a haul of touchdown runs and catches.
Senior athletes from Cochrane and area brought home a haul of medals from the 2022 Canada 55+ Summer Games, hosted in Kamloops, B.C. Representing the Zone 2 (Big Country) Senior Sports Society Area Seven, Cochrane athletes helped the association rack up 65 medals.
