The Rockyview Silvertips junior B box lacrosse team made franchise history by winning their Tier 1 central division in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League (RMLL) for the first time ever. The ‘Tips registered a 13-7 regular-season record to earn a first-round bye in the playoffs.
Despite missing the first four games of the 2022 season, Rockyview Silvertips captain and fifth-year veteran Nolan Oakey rounded off his regular season as the RMLL’s top scorer in the junior B division. Oakey’s prolific offence also set a franchise record for the Silvertips. He set the record with three goals and eight assists in the Silvertips’ 19-3 win over the Mountain View Mavericks on July 2, his 11 points propelling him to 101 points overall at the time. The previous record was 93 points, set by Joel Henry in 2006.
Sixteen Cochrane Endurance Project athletes ended their 2022 track-and-field season with 11 medals at the Athletics Alberta provincial championships at Calgary’s Foothills Athletic Park.
The Cochrane Cobras U13 and U15 softball teams finished their 2022 season with gold medals at the Calgary Minor Softball City Championships on July 9. The Cobras U13 team beat the Foothills Fury in Division 2A, while the Cherry Bombs U15 squad overcame the Airdrie Angels in Division 2B to secure the title. The U13 Cobras’ success marked their third consecutive gold medal at the city championships.
Cochrane-area baseball players had the opportunity to learn from the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Academy when they came to town to host a one-day clinic on July 12, in partnership with Cochrane Minor Ball. The clinic was open to minor ball players ages eight to 13, regardless of whether or not they were members of Cochrane Minor Ball.
Cochrane’s Jordan Loewen was crowned Canada’s junior boys’ single bowling champion on July 12, when he won the gold medal at the Youth Bowling Council’s national championships in Oshawa, Ont. Loewen scored a 265 in the gold-medal match, 43 pins ahead of his competitor, Keeran Pillai of Saskatchewan. The 15-year-old also won gold as a member of Alberta’s boys’ trio team.
The Cochrane Piranhas Swim Club hosted their annual swim meet on July 15 and 16 at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. The Piranhas recorded several personal bests, won plenty of medals, and swimmer Aaron Xiao broke a provincial record for his age group in the 100-metre butterfly with a final time of 1:06.12.
The Rockyview Silvertips junior B lacrosse team won their first-ever Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League central division championship on July 23, sweeping their perennial rival the Calgary Chill at the Brentwood Sportsplex in a best-of-three series. The series victory booked Rockyview a berth in the Larry Bishop Memorial Cup – the provincial championship tournament for junior B Tier 1 lacrosse.
