Cochrane sports year in review: May

CobraCats jr and sr girls win 2022 RVS divisionals

  • Rogers Hometown Hockey came to Cochrane May 7, bringing hundreds of sports fans to the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre for a day of hockey-themed fun and entertainment. The evening culminated with a large-screen broadcast of the Calgary Flames’ NHL playoff game against the Dallas Stars.
  • Both the junior and senior CobraCats rugby sevens teams, comprised of players from Bow Valley and Cochrane high schools, won their division banners on May 9 in Airdrie. Both girls’ teams ousted the Springbank Phoenix in the tournament final, with the juniors winning 21-10 and the seniors shutting the Phoenix out 24-0.
  • Five Cochrane Cobras football players were named to the south roster for Football Alberta’s 2022 Senior Bowl game on May 23. The showcase game, which pits southern Alberta selects against their northern Alberta counterparts, features the top graduating players from throughout the province.
  • After opening their 2022 Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League season with just one win from their first four games, the Rockyview Silvertips junior B box lacrosse team showed there’s no place like home when they their first two games at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre on May 13 and 14. The ‘Tips beat the Mountain View Mavericks 17-8 and the Fort Saskatchewan Rebels by the same score line the following day.
  • After winning the RVSA banner earlier in the month, the CobraCats girls’ rugby sevens team maintained their great 2022 season by winning the Tier 1 South Central Zone championship on May 30, dominating the Foothills Composite Falcons 71-0 in the final. The senior boys’ CobraCats, meanwhile, lost in their zones final against the Holy Trinity Academy Knights 33-5, knocking the Cochranites out of provincial contention.
  • The Bow Valley Grizzlies senior men’s rugby team won the first ‘Battle of the Bears’ match-up of 2022 with the Banff Grizzlies on May 28, defeating their regional rivals 47-17 at the Mitford Ponds playing field.
