Cochrane track stars strutted their stuff at the Alberta Summer Games July 20 to 22 in Grand Prairie. All three high schools had strong representation for the Athletics competition. Leading the way for Cochrane was a gold medal performance by Ryan Hegarty in the 300m hurdles, who also finished fourth in the 100 metre hurdles and fifth in the 4x100 metre relay. In step with Hegarty was Darci Petersen, who won a silver medal in the 15 and under 2,000 metre race and narrowly missed out on a medal in the 1,200 metre, placing fourth in an extremely close and entertaining competition. Peterson also placed sixth in the 800 metre and anchored Zone 2s distance medley relay. "The Summer Games went quite well for the Zone 2 athletes in track as well as triathlon," said Zone 2 head coach Travis Cummings  "I wasn't overly surprised with the outstanding results but some of the athletes surprised themselves; realizing the full potential of their abilities. Great racing from some talented athletes and lots of positive learning experiences." Morgan Boot placed sixth in the women’s 17 and under shot put, fourth in the distance medley relay, and sixth in the 4x100 metre relay with Makenna Myatt placing ninth in the 15 and under pentathlon. Zoe Cinnamon had a very strong weekend, narrowly missing  a medal in the 3,000 metre, placing fourth, while also finishing ninth in the 1,500 metre. Julianna Mackenzie placed sixth in hammer throw, her first time competing in the event, seventh in javelin, and ninth in shot put. Liam McCullough placed 12th in the 1,200 metre with a personal best in a very competitive race, while Sophie Pregitzer placed fifth in 17 and under 300 metre hurdles and also ran on the 4x100 metre girls relay team that placed sixth. Mackenzie Rosebrugh was 12th in the 17 and under women’s triple and long jump. Trenton Spademan was eighth in the 4x100 metre relay, eighth in discus, and tenth in both triple and long jump in 15 and under boys competition. Springbank natives Kennedy and Mikhail Bond also had some solid top 10 finishes. Mikhail competed in the 100 and 200 metre hurdles, the 2000 metre race, and the 15 and under boys 4x100 metre and distance medley relays, placing top ten in all of his events. The triathlon representation from Cochrane saw five athletes contest the swim, bike, and run events. Cochranites were led by the efforts of Holly Moores, who won silver in the 14 and 15 girls age category, and also won a silver in the relay event. Brock Gilbert and Alex Johnson each competed in the 12 and 13 male event, Gilbert finished fourth and Johnson eighth.
