The Cochrane Cowboys had a busy weekend competing in two tournaments.
One was the Westmount/Connect Open in Calgary, an elementary and junior high tournament that featured 16 wrestlers from the Cowboys organization.
The Friday night elementary portion of the competition was participation only but the Cowboys said the wrestlers had a great turnout and the kids got some good experience.
“We also had one of our Jr. High Boys Brendan Maguire assistant coach, which is so cool when the older kids mentor and give back,” Bree Adam, Cowboys registrar, stated via email.
The Jr. High Girls also wrestled Friday night finding the podium more than once.
On the podium were:
Gold - Annika Fines, Danyka Labelle and Zoë Adam
Silver - Jaityn Labelle and Grace Toner
Bronze - Catherine Swedlo
Saturday was Jr. High Boys at the Westmount/Connect Open:
Gold - Brendan Maguire
Silver - Nicolas Hooper
Bronze - Eli Fines
On Saturday, the elementary wrestlers hit the mat again in Wetaskiwin. This was a full tournament not a take-down and once again the Cowboys had medal finishes.
Gold - Rylee Adam, Chase Adam, Kael Labelle and Austyn Labelle
Silver - Nolan Maguire, Niko Toner, Jack Edwards
To add to the success, the Cowboys were also impressed with the conduct of its wrestlers, a coach in Wetaskiwin commented on the admirable sportsmanship of one of the Cowboy’s young wrestlers.
“This is actually the best compliment we can receive as a club, because true sportsmen and women are the goal for us - not the medals,” said Adam.
