Cochrane Cowboys are getting ready to ride.
The club is sending wrestlers to California for a Canadian team training camp starting June 21.
This, after 16-year-old wrestler Sarah Gregory and 15-year-old Connor McNeice were in Spain and Romania last month, wrestling for Canada at international amateur meets.
“Both Connor and Sarah went through Romania and Spain on that tour,” Cowboys head coach Vern McNeice said. Both won bronze in Spain. Gregory, wrestling at 46 kg, won silver in Romania and Connor McNeice, wrestling at 58 kg, finished fourth.
Now it’s off to California for the duo and teammates Connor Pointen, 90 kg, Danika Cook, 47 kg and Brendan McKeage, who will audit the proceedings after suffering a fractured arm in his final high school rugby game of the season.
“They’re training with Americans down in California,” Vern McNeice said. “Some of the best kids in the States will be going down to train with them for that week.”
Following the training session Vern and son Connor McNeice fly to Guadalajara, Mexico, for the Pan Am wrestling championships. Vern McNeice has been selected to help coach Canadian wrestlers at the Pan Ams.
“Once that camp is over, Connor and I will join the rest of the Canadian team and head straight down to Mexico,” he said. “We’re going in with high goals and confidence.”
Deeper into the summer, Cochrane Cowboys will wrestle at the Ontario Cup and Western Canada Summer Games.
