A former Didsbury resident has claimed a national championship.
Tanner Vandenhoven, who now calls Airdrie home, claimed the junior Canadian BMX championship in Drummondville, Que. on Oct. 4. He beat out eight of the best racers across Canada to claim the title. During the previous day, Vandenhoven placed third in the time trial with a time of 36.1 seconds.
“I did really well (in the race). Basically, I got out front right away and stayed out front. I didn’t know how I was going to compare to the other guys so I just did my race,” he said.
“It’s a full sprint basically as fast as you can.”
To qualify for the Canadian championships, Vandenhoven also won the Alberta championships, which took place in Airdrie in August.
Vandenhoven says he has a simple philosophy when racing.
“Basically, I’m just doing the best I can to win. I don’t really focus on anybody else, I just focus on winning. It’s more of a mental game,” he said.
