High school boys' soccer season enters homestretch for Cochrane teams

The 2023 playoffs are around the corner for Cochrane's high-school boys' soccer teams.

The 2023 playoffs are around the corner for Cochrane's high-school boys' soccer teams.

In the public school league, the Cochrane Cobras and Bow Valley Bobcats will be fighting for their final placements on May 30 with games against the Bert Church Chargers and George McDougall Mustangs, respectively.

The Cobras will kick off their final game of the regular season in second place of the Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) league with a 4-1-0 record. The Cobras' final match will be against the still-unbeaten Bert Church Chargers at Monklands Park in Airdrie.

Cochrane High currently boasts the RVSA's top offence after five matches, having scored 23 goals while letting in six. Their sole defeat thus far came against the Springbank Phoenix, who beat the Cochranites 4-3 in a close battle earlier this spring.

The Bobcats, meanwhile, are a few spots lower down the RVSA standings heading into the final matchday. Fourth-place Bow Valley is sporting a 2-3 record heading into their game against George McDougall. The south Cochrane team had been outscored 17-6 by their opponents, though nine of those goals against came in a single game, against the high-flying Chargers.

The RVSA playoffs get underway with the division's quarterfinal match-ups this Thursday (June 1). That day, the sixth-seeded team will play the third-place team, while the fourth- and fifth-place squads will also square off against one another.

The top two teams will receive a bye through to the semi-finals, which get underway on June 6. Locations are still to be determined, but RVSA soccer games typically kick off at 4:30 pm.

As for Cochrane's Catholic high school, the St. Timothy Thunder's senior boys' soccer team is still seeking its first win after six defeats to open their 2023 campaign in Division 3 of the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA).

The Thunder have struggled to find the net this season and have suffered some heavy defeats already. Nonetheless, St. Tim's has a few postponed games on their schedule still, which will give the team a chance to finish the campaign on a positive note.

Info on the Thunder's season can be found at calgaryhighschoolsports.ca.
