St. Timothy Thunder soccer alumni Amber and Sage Meyers committed to play for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans women’s soccer team when they officially signed with the school on March 8.

The Trojans play in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and have a strong history dating back to the early 1990s. The team won the ACAC Conference bronze medal in 1992 and 1993, while also adding an ACAC Conference Championship during the 2002-03 season. The Trojans also took home a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National bronze medal during that same season.

The Meyers sisters both played for the Thunder.

Amber started with the team in 2014, helping the squad to their first Division 3 City Championship and finished her high school career when she graduated in 2016, playing alongside Sage who was in her first season with the team. The pair helped St. Timothy to a second place finish in Cities, after a 3-1 loss to Crescent Heights. The younger of the two sisters recently finished her career with St. Timothy, helping the team to a 6-0 record in the regular season, as well as a pair of playoff wins to propel the Thunder to their fourth league final in as many years. Unfortunately, the team placed second on both occasions, losing to Crescent Heights 3-2 in extra time as well as a 7-2 defeat to St. Gabriel this past October.

While both Cochrane soccer stars committed to the Trojans, they took very different paths to the team.

“Initially, I was looking at going to the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) for environmental engineering and had been talking with the head coach about their soccer program and to be honest, I wasn’t really that interested in it,” the younger of the two Meyers sisters said.

“But then I heard about the transfer Energy Engineer program involving SAIT and the University of Calgary, which pretty much caught my attention right away. Ultimately, I decided to go to SAIT because of the program I could go into, and the bonus of playing soccer was really the cherry on top.

“Playing with Amber is going to be awesome. I’m really excited about that and we also played with a couple of girls who are on the team right now throughout the years in club soccer, so it’s just going to be a really great experience overall. I’m super excited to get into my program as well, so to say I’m pumped is an understatement.”

Amber was going to start a business program at Mount Royal University (MRU) in the fall, but decided that she also wanted to pursue the chance to play soccer with her sister.

“For me, I was going to start at Mount Royal in the fall and after Sage committed to SAIT, I figured they’d have the same program (business) at SAIT too … basically I thought, why not try to make the team and get into the program I wanted,” Amber said.

“I played a few games with the team and got accepted into the program and the coach of the team (John Talerico) said he’d like to have me on the team and that I’d fit in really well with the group of girls coming back.

“It’s great that it worked out the way it did. Sage and I are super pumped to play together once again.”
