Cochranites Tanner and Straws Milan were busy last week as both were competing in the 2018 Calgary Stampede rodeo in the steer wrestling event that took place from July 6 to 15. Tanner, the oldest of the brothers, also faced an unexpected obstacle before his 2018 Stampede event began when his horses were stopped at the border. "I was getting pretty worries there," said Milan during an interview with CTV Calgary. "Ended up I never did get my horses across the border for Day 1." An offer to help Milan, who drew into Pool B, with his predicament arrived before he had a chance to ask for help. “Tyler Pearson, he was in Pool A and he was leaving to go to some other rodeos and he left his horses here,” said Milan. “I didn’t even have to call him. He called me and said ‘I heard your situation and everything and I’ve got my horses here and just feel free to use them'.” Milan says rodeo is one big family and no one would hesitate to go of their way to help another competitor. “It’s just the way the rodeo world works. There’s so many good people,” said Milan. “I was very happy and I appreciate Tyler doing that for me because it damn sure helped me out.” With his borrowed horses, Tanner had unofficial times of 5.1, 13.6 and 13.9 placing him eighth in the group with a total aggregate of $2,500 in the three days of Pool B action. His brother Straws finished with no time decisions during all three days, putting the 2011 Stampede Champion in last place in the pool. Tanner had a chance to qualify for championship Sunday with a top four finish on July 14, but finished eighth with a time of 13.7. Steer wrestling is a rodeo event in which a horse-mounted rider chases a steer, drops from the horse to the steer, then wrestles the steer to the ground by its horns. Both Milan brothers are currently competing in Snake River Stampede in Nampa, Idaho.
