The Cochrane Piranhas Swim Club had a third swim meet in as many weeks as 46 swimmers from the club competed in the Calgary Tritons meet at the Repsol Center in Calgary on July 14.
Rylan Carnegie was the team leader on this day, as the young swimmer had first place finishes in the boys six and under 50 metre back, 25 metre flutter, 25 metre back and 25 metre freestyle.
Ben Barclay had a second place finish in the boys 11 and 12-year-old 50 metre butterfly while his older brother Jake Barclay had a third place finish in the boys 15 to 17-year-old 800 metre freestyle. Natalie Barreto-Waringer placed first in the girls 13 and 14-year-old 50 metre breast and third in the 800 metre freestyle while Cadence Bashow placed second in the girls six and under 50 metre freestyle, second in the girls 25 metre back and third in the 25 metre freestyle.
Rylee Bashow placed second in the girls nine and 10-year-old 25 metre back and third in 200 metre freestyle with Reid Boukall placing second in the boys seven and under 25 metre fly. Kyla Fritz placed third in the girls 15 to 17-year-old 100 metre freestyle and Bryson Hammer placed second in the boys 13 and 14-year-old 200 metre individual medley (IM). Jamie Harris placed second in both the girls 15 to 17-year-old 200 metre freestyle and the 100 metre fly and third in both the 50 metre back and 50 metre fly.
Max Kruger placed first in the boys 13 and 14-year-old 100 metre IM, second in the 200 metre freestyle and third in the 50 metre fly while Tegan Lester-Olivier placed first in the girls nine and 10-year-old 100 metre freestyle and second in the 25 metre fly while her brother Travis Lester-Olivier placed third in the boys nine and 10-year-old 25 metre breast and second in the 100 metre IM. The third sibling Troy Lester-Olivier placed third in the boys 13 and14-year-old 20 metre freestyle.
To wrap up the Piranhas individual events, Bria Michalski placed second in the girls 13 and 14-year-old 50 metre breast and third in the 50 metre fly, Josie Powers had second place finishes in the girls 11 and 12-year-old 100 metre breast, 200 metre freestyle and 50 metre breast while Caebri Smith placed third in the boys nine and 10-year-old 50 metre back. Their teammates Mackinley Smith placed first in the girls six and under 25 metre freestyle and 25 metre flutter, Catherine Swedlo placed second in the girls 13 and 14-year-old 100 metre backstroke, Evan Thibodeau placed third in the boys seven and eight-year-old 25 metre breast and Jacob Wowryk placed third in the boys seven and eight-year-old 25 metre fly.
The Piranhas also had some very successful results in the team relay portion of the swim meet.
The team of Aggie Baker, Natalie Barreto-Waringer, Catherine Swedlo and Anjali Simms placed first in the girls 14 and under 200 metre medley relay while the team made up of Jade Macosky, Bria Michalski, Kyla Fritz and Jamie Harris placed first in the girls 17 and under 200 metre medley relay.
The group of Bria Michalski, Aggie Baker, Natalie Barreto-Waringer and Anjali Simms placed second in the girls 200 metre freestyle relay, Catherine Swedlo, Kyla Fritz, Jade Macosky and Jamie Harris placed first in the girls 17 and under 200 metre freestyle relay and Caebri Smith, Travis Lester-Olivier, Eli Fitzsimmons and Isaac Thibodeau placed third in the boys 10 and under 100 metre medley relay.
Bryson Hammer, Max Kruger, Jake Barclay and Troy Lester-Olivier placed third in the boys 17 and under 200 metre medley relay while Jacob Wowyrk, Rylan Carnegie, Reid Boukall and Gavin Lange placed third in the boys eight and under 100 metre freestyle relay. The team of Travis Lester-Olivier, Eli Fitzsimmons, Caebri Smith and Isaac Thibodeau placed third in the boys 10 and under 100 metre freestyle relay and finally, the team of Jake Barclay, Bryson Hammer, Troy Lester-Olivier and Max Kruger placed second in the boys 17 under 200 metre freestyle relay.
The Piranhas continue with their busy month of competitions on July 20 and 21 when the group will partake in the Calgary Swordfish meet.
“We have two meets before August long as well as Regionals and Provincials so there will be lots of planning on the part of coaching staff,” said Piranhas head coach Breanna Hendriks. “We need to ensure all the swimmers get the appropriate skills they need in order to swim to the best of their abilities.”
