Piranhas prepping for Provincials

The Cochrane Piranhas are nearing the end of the swimming competition season and after a strong showing at the Regional Championships Aug. 11 and 12 will look to finish the season on a high note at Provincials.

35 members of the Cochrane Piranhas swim club qualified for the Provincial swim meet.

The Cochrane Piranhas are nearing the end of the swimming competition season and after a strong showing at the Regional Championships Aug. 11 and 12 will look to finish the season on a high note at Provincials. The club has learned that 35 swimmers from the club have qualified or wild carded to attend the 2018 Alberta Summer Swim Association (ASSA) Provincials in Edmonton Aug. 17 to 19. 18 individual swims and five relay swims qualified this past weekend at the Region E Championships. 18 swimmers have wild carded individually with nine relay teams also wild carding for Provincials.

In the individual portion of the event, the Piranhas had an excellent showing led by Rylan Carnegie. Carnegie won gold in the boys six and under 25 metre breaststroke and 25 metre freestyle as well as a silver in the 50 metre freestyle. Ben Barclay won silver medals in the boys 11 and 12-year-old 50 metre freestyle and 50 metre fly while his brother Jake Barclay won bronze medals in the boys 15 to 17-year-old 100 metre backstroke and 50 metre backstroke.

Natalie Barreto-Waringer won silver medals in the girls 13 and 14-year-old 50 metre breaststroke and 100 metre breast, Cadence Bashow won bronze medals in the girls six and under 50 metre back and 25 metre back and Sam Cheverie won a bronze in the boys six and under 25 metre back and 50 metre backstroke. Jacob Corcoran won a gold in the boys seven and eight-year-old category for 100 metre individual medley (IM) and Kaitlyn Eiserman won a gold medal in the girls nine and 10 25 metre fly, and silver in both the 50 metre fly and 100 metre freestyle.

Jamie Harris won a silver in each of the girls 15 to 17-year-old 50 metre backstroke, 50 metre fly and 100 meter individual medley. Oliver Johnson won a bronze in the boys nine and 10-year-old 50 metre freestyle and 50 metre fly while Ella Kruger won a sliver in the girls 11 and 12-year-old category for 200 metre individual medley.

Max Kruger won a bronze in the boys 13 and 14-year-old 100 metre breaststroke, 200 metre individual medley, and 100 metre fly, Tegan Lester-Olivier won a silver in the girls nine and 10-year-old 25 metre fly and a bronze in the 200 metre freestyle as well as the 100 metre free and her brother Travis Lester-Olivier won a sliver in the boys nine and 10-year-old 100 metre freestyle as well as the 50 metre free and also taking home silver in the 25 metre breaststroke.

 Jade Macosky won a bronze in the girls 15 to 17-year-old 100 metre fly and 200 metre freestyle, Bria Michalski won a gold in the girls 13 and 14-year-old  50 metre breaststroke and a silver in the 100 metre breaststroke and Josie Powers won a silver in the girls 11 and 12-year-old 50 metre breaststroke while also taking home a  bronze in the 200 metre freestyle.

Mackinley Smith won a silver in the girls six and under 25 metre freestyle, 50 metre backstroke and 25 metre backstroke while Catherine Swedlo won a silver in the girls 14 and under 800 metre freestyle, a bronze in the 100 metre individual medley as well as the 50 metre freestyle. To wrap up the individual events, Evan Thibodeau won a bronze in the boys seven and eight-year-old 25 metre breaststroke.

In the team relays, Cochrane once again had some fantastic performances resulting in teams qualifying for provincials.

 The girls 10 and under team of Rylee Bashow, Tegan Lester-Olivier, Kylan Morin and Kaitlyn Eiserman won a silver medal  in the 100 metre freestyle relay while The boys 10 and under team of Owen Johnson, Caebri Smith, Isaac Thibodeau and Travis Lester-Olivier finished second in the 100 metre medley relay securing them a silver medal.

The mixed 10 and under team of Eli Fitzsimmons, Rylee Bashow, Kaitlyn Eiserman and Tegan Lester-Olivier placed second in the 100 metre medley relay while the mixed 14 and under team of Bryson Hammer, Natalie Barreto-Waringer, Max Kruger and Catherine Swedlo placed second in the 200 metre medley relay, winning silver medals.The mixed 14 and under team of Bryson Hammer, Natalie Barreto-Waringer, Catherine Swedlo and Max Kruger finished first, winning a gold medal. With the many silvers and one gold medal, these teams booked themselves a spot in provincials.

The girls 12 and under team of Sydney Carnegie, Makayla Lawton, Brie Hammer and Quinn Cheverie placed 3rd and won a bronze medal in the 200 metre freestyle relay, the mixed eight and under team of Cadence Bashow, Rylan Carnegie, Evan Thibodeau and Mackinley Smith placed third in the 100 metre medley relay and the mixed 10 and under team of Kylan Morin, Isaac Thibodeau, Tegan Lester-Olivier and Owen Johnson placed 3rd in the 100 metre medley relay.

Finishing up the team relays, the mixed team of Ella Kruger, Josie Powers, Ben Barclay and Quinn Fitzsimmons placed third in the 200 metre medley 12 and under relay.
