St. Timothy High School Thunder roared to their first-ever provincial high school track-and-field medals June 5-6 in Lethbridge.
Alex Howells’s silver in the junior boy’s 3,000-metre run and Laura Huck’s bronze in senior girl’s 400 are a first for St. Tim’s at Alberta School’s Athletic Association provincial track championships.
Thunder track coach, and accomplished distance runner, Travis Cummings was brimming with pride for the accomplishments of his school’s athletes.
“They did pretty well. Sophia was fifth,” he recounted. “Alex won silver and then Laura came home with bronze.
“It’s the first time we’ve won provincial medals. It’s definitely a step in the right direction for the school.”
He had the kids training on an upward trajectory with the goal of having them peak at provincials. After putting in medal performances at both the City and Zone meets last month, his athletes were right on schedule. And they didn’t fold under the heat and light of provincial competition.
“They’re setting the tone for kids to come,” Cummings said.
He has Nowicki and Howells for two more years. Huck graduates this year.
