The St. Timothy's Thunder High School Track & Field team contested their event disciplines at the CSHSAA divisional championship May 16. On a sweltering day at the track, the team turned in some very inspiring performances, the Thunder qualified 11 athletes to the City Championships. Thunder head coach Travis Cummings was happy with how his group performed and said qualifying more than 10 athletes for Cities and other championships has started to become the norm for the Thunder program. "We're sending 11 athletes to City Championships, which has been pretty standard the last couple years. I was pretty pleased with it and the coaching staff was pretty ecstatic overall," Cummings said. "We had a couple (school) records set yesterday ... Scott Delsing broke the javelin record, we had a record set in the 4x400 metre relay and then the girls 4x100 metre relay set a school record as well. We've been pretty successful the last couple years so results wise, it's what we've come to expect but the kids stepped up and did what they needed to do." "Lot's of personal bests and a few athletes surprised themselves and us, which is always nice ... everyone was very well prepared and I think I speak for everyone involved (in the Thunder track program) that we've come to expect these type of results now." There were many podium performances on the day but none shone brighter than the efforts of Maggie Brolsma. Brolsma was victorious in the intermediate girls 1,500 metre and 3,000 metre runs, and was also a member of the girls 4x100m relay team that qualified for City Championships. The five-year veteran of the St. Timothy's Track & Field program has matured into an invaluable contributor in distance running according to Cummings. "Maggie has been consistently improving under the radar for the last five years or so ... yesterday was a good way for her to shine because we have lots of really good female athletes and Maggie just does her work quietly and doesn't really make a big fuss about it," Cummings said. "Yesterday was a good moment for to shine and show everyone that she's right up there with the best athletes we have had at St. Tim's in the last ten years or so." "She deserves a lot of credit because she goes about her work in a very humble way. The junior high kids look up to her as a role model because she's a very quiet leader and just leads by example." Grade 12 athlete Josh Novak finished his last divisional meet in fine form, with a bronze medal in the senior boys 800 metre, and two silvers in the 1,500 metre and 3,000 metre races. He was also a member of the boys 4x400 metre relay team that placed fourth overall. Intermediate division results: Scott Delsing placed second in the boys 1,500m and 3,000m races, and also had a big day in javelin, winning bronze. He also ran on the 4x400m relay team. Rookie Isaiah Springer won bronze in the 800 metre and 1,500 metre, and ran anchor on the 4x400 metre relay team. Eric Swedlo won silver in the 800 metre and ran third leg on the 4x400 metre relay team. On the intermediate girls side, following Brolsma's performances, Mikenna Spademan won bronze in triple jump with a big personal best jump, and anchored our 4x100 metre relay team to a fifth place finish. Kennedy Michalski qualified for City Champs in the 100 metre and 200 metre, and ran the lead leg of the 4x100 metre relay. Natasha Le qualified for City Champs as third leg on the 4x100 metre relay. Senior rookie Brandon Reis won a trip to City Championships in triple jump, winning silver, while two juniors, Theo Blough and Elijah Springer, rounded out the team's City Championships qualifier. Blough will be competing in High Jump and Springer will be contesting the 400 metre and triple jump at City Championships, which will take place May 26 at Foothills Stadium.
