Cochrane High School is sending three graduating football players to the Football Alberta’s Senior Bowl next month in Edmonton.
Receiver Kyle Moortgat, linebacker Scott McMillan and lineman Dale Cummings are all suiting up for the South, joining southern Alberta’s top graduating football players to take on the North at Commonwealth Stadium.
“Kyle was arguably one of the best players in the province last year,” Cobras co-head coach and offensive coordinator Rob McNab said of the receiver who was the primary target of quarterbacks Cody Stevens and Kelton Beach, and who joins the University of Regina in the fall to play football and basketball.
“Ken Polson, one of our coaches, was down there with the Senior Bowl and said he did terrific,” McNab said of Moortgat’s showing at April 11-13 Senior Bowl South tryouts. “They love him down there. He’ll represent Cochrane really well at the Senior Bowl, as will Scott McMillan at linebacker and Dale Cummings. Those three guys are going to be missed next year here.
“And congratulations for them to go out and do that.”
McMillan terrorized opposing offences this season at his linebacker spot.
“Can’t say enough about the aggressive play of McMillan on defence,” McNab said. “He was tough to contain.”
And Cummings has just signed a scholarship agreement with Montana State-Northern to play National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Frontier Conference football in the fall.
“Great kids. Always at practice. Always ready to go. And always full speed. There are no excuses with those kids. That’s why they’re going where they’re going.
“I spend a good three years with them out there and training in the offseason. For them to put it all together and even have the want to go to the next level is just awesome. Because it’s hard.”
That hard work is paying off with a trip to the Football Alberta Senior Bowl May 19 at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium.
