HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — Hoyt Garland Harwell, a longtime reporter for The Associated Press who covered key events in the American South and was a mentor to young reporters, has died. He was 93.

MONTREAL — Quebec director Érik Canuel, who scored a box office smash with the bilingual comedy "Bon Cop Bad Cop," died Saturday at age 63. Public relations agency Annexe says Canuel died of secondary plasma cell leukemia.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — United States-born kitefoiler J.J. Rice, who was to represent Tonga at the Paris Olympics, has died in a diving accident. He was 18.

HOUSTON (AP) — Paul Pressler, a leading figure of the Southern Baptist Convention who was accused of sexually abusing boys and young men and later settled a lawsuit over the allegations, has died. He was 94.

LONDON (AP) — Kevin Campbell, a former forward who played for Arsenal and Everton, has died. He was 54.

LONDON (AP) — Matija Sarkic, the Montenegro goalkeeper who played for English second-tier club Millwall, has died. He was 26. Millwall announced the death of Sarkic on Saturday. No further details were disclosed.

Lynn Conway, a pioneer in the design of microchips that are at the heart of consumer electronics who overcame discrimination as a transgender person, has died at age 86.

Tejano singer and longtime television music show host Johnny Canales has died. He was 77. Canales' family confirmed his death in a statement posted Thursday on the Johnny and Nora Canales Show Facebook page. The post did not provide a cause of death.

NEW YORK (AP) — Ron Simons, an actor who turned into a formidable screen and stage producer, winning four Tony Awards and having several films selected at the Sundance Film Festival, has died. He was 63.
