Barbara Ann (Walker) Wyman

Barbara Ann (Walker) Wyman passed away peacefully on Monday, December 4, 2023. Barbara was born into a wonderful Christian family on May 31, 1941 to Clifford and Ruth Walker.  She enjoyed her early years growing up on her family’s small ranch near Clayton, New Mexico.  After high school she attended New Mexico State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts degree in psychology.  In 1992 she completed a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology at the University of Calgary, Alberta where she also taught psychology for a semester.

During her undergraduate time, she met and, in 1963, married David Wyman.  The couple would have three children and, over the years, be blessed with 11 wonderful grandchildren.

As a young couple, they felt God’s call in their lives to two ministries, first to Latin America and second to helping university students fulfill God’s leading in their own lives.  The Wymans invested a year studying Spanish language and literature in Costa Rica before arriving in the nation of Mexico where they would spend the next 15 years ministering with university students, representing the International Mission Board, SBC.  Barbara also taught psychology in the School of Nursing at the Mexican-American Hospital in Guadalajara.

In 1985, they were asked by that Board to transfer to Cochrane, Alberta for the purpose of aiding the beginning of what today is called the Canadian Baptist Theological Seminary and College.  As well, they were tasked with the opportunity to develop Christian education ministries in the churches of the Canadian National Baptist Convention across Canada.  At the seminary Barbara taught university and master level courses in developmental psychology and other related subjects from 1988 to her retirement in 2008. After retiring David and Barbara invested much of their time into developing materials for homechurchonline.com.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dr. David Wyman, her daughter LaWanda and her husband Barry Bonney; her daughter Marisa and her husband Shane Spannagel; and her son Greg and his wife Cheri Wyman; and her adored grandchildren Kayla, Kristen and Kelsey Bonney; Ellen, Caleb, Samuel, and Jared Spannagel; and Jordan, Kendra and Austin Wyman.

In addition she is survived by her brother Dwight and his wife Consuelo Walker, her brother-in-law Ron Bowman, and many nephews and nieces whom she loved dearly. Barbara was predeceased by her beloved parents Clifford and Ruth Walker, treasured sisters Carol Bowman and Becky Crausby, her sister-in-law Anne (Wyman), her niece Teresa Crausby and her grandson Scott Spannagel.

Barbara was a woman of great wisdom and faith who served as a mentor and mother figure to many who loved her dearly. Her greatest joy was in investing deeply in the lives of others. She was an example of a lifetime of serving Christ, and will be remembered for her wisdom, kindness and thoughtfulness.

Dr. Barbara Wyman’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 30th at 10:30 am (MST) at Richmond Hill Baptist Church, 7251 Sierra Morena Blvd SW, Calgary,  Alberta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to either:

The Percy & Marion Lee Scholarship at the Canadian Baptist Theological Seminary and College or MoveIn (the ministry Barbara’s granddaughter Kristen is a part of) https://movein.global/ca/kristen/
