GUEST, Charles Roy “Nipper”

December 18, 1925 – May 3, 2023

Nipper (Charles Roy) Guest, C.M., born in Edmonton, AB, on December 18, 1925, to parents Hazel (nee Thomson) and Fred Guest, died peacefully in Calgary on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. Joining the Canadian army at the age of 17, Nipper was wounded in action in October 1944, while in Belgium. After his convalescence, Nipper studied Mining Engineering at the University of Edmonton and graduated in 1949. In 1954, he married Eleanor Isobel Mary Crandall (deceased May 5, 2012), and after initially residing in Calgary, the couple built a house in Bearspaw in 1961. A founding partner of Spartan Controls, Nipper was instrumental in establishing its innovative comprehensive employee ownership and profit sharing. The success of Spartan allowed Nipper and Eleanor to establish the Bearspaw Benevolent Foundation, which continues to aid those with less fortune in life become independent and successful. In recognition of his leadership in demonstrating the value of true employee ownership and for his charitable work, Nipper was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2020. Nipper’s sense of adventure led him to visit over sixty countries travelling mainly by bicycle. He is survived by sons, Fred, Gord, and Bruce; and a dear companion of the last ten years, Heidi Price.
