One of my all-time favourite artists dropped by at lunch the other day with a very important message. And I always take him seriously, because of what a real cool guy he is. Accompanied by a dazzling crystalline entourage, he made his grand entry on eagle’s wings and wearing an Indigenous feathered headdress. Yup, our visitor was none other than Chief Jack Frost!
Chief Jack Frost and his companions appeared on our dining room window pane recently on a very cold sub-zero day. I had just been thinking about the upcoming Cochrane Indigenous Arts and Culture Week, and happened to glance at the frosty display.
To my amazement, there he was, artist Jack Frost in his persona as a First Nations chief, and his visit was all about that community-building event that runs from March 16 to 23.
It begins this Saturday with an exhibit of Stoney Nakoda artwork by Dennis and Daisynae Labelle at Route 22 Collective Gallery. The week concludes with a March 23 family-friendly concert, dinner and dance at the Cochrane Lion’s Event Centre. In between, various venues will be hosting workshops and presentations that will honour the heart of our region’s First Nations art and culture.
